| AUGUST 17, 2002 For Immediate Release: Nancy Van de Vate composer
American composer Nancy Van de Vate will present guest lectures at several
universities in South Africa during the first two weeks of September.
These will follow the presentation of a paper on August 29, 2002 at the
29th Annual Conference of the Musicological Society of Southern Africa,
to be held in Pretoria. Van de Vate's paper, entitled "Beyond Notation:
New Forms of Musical Analysis," is closely tied to the theme of the conference,
"Analysis for Africa?" Professor Kofi Agawu of Princeton University will
be the conference's keynote speaker.
During the following week, Van de Vate will present talks about contemporary music at the University of Pretoria and the University of South Africa (also in Pretoria), at the University of the Witswatersrand in Johannesburg, then will fly to Capetown for presentations at the University of Capetown. An inveterate traveller, this is Van de Vate's tenth trip to Africa but her first appearance there as a musician, and her first visit to the country of South Africa.
